Boulder, Colorado, June 2009 –The Olomomo Nut Company and The Organic Dish, two Boulder, Colorado companies with innovative platforms and a passion to succeed, were recently awarded first and second prize at the Bard Center for Entrepreneurship’s 9th annual Business Plan Competition.
This is the first year the contest has been open to applicants throughout Colorado – with a record-breaking 76 entries submitted. Justin Perkins of Olomomo Nut Company, a high-end all natural and organic brand producing flavored nuts sold at local farmers’ markets, won $10,000 and Beckie and Toby Hemmerling of The Organic Dish, which creates ready-to-eat frozen meals made from organic and farm-fresh ingredients, won $5,000. Both agreed that their success would not have been possible without the support of the Boulder Innovation Center, one of America’s premier entrepreneurial support organizations. The BIC had earlier engaged with both companies, providing counsel and mentoring along the way. “The BIC introduced us to a huge variety of advisors,” Toby Hemmerling said. “All of these mentors were not only critical in our preparation for the Bard competition, but also with ongoing support specific to our business. These are amazing experts that helped us confront strategic challenges and identify and capitalize on opportunities.” Perkins, who aspires to launch the Olomomo Nut Company nationally online and in coffee shops, said “The BIC staff gave me so much encouragement and confidence and have connected me to experts who have helped me immeasurably and whom I might not have met otherwise.” With its hand-selected team of mentors and advisors, the BIC defines a new model for cost-effective business incubation across key industry sectors holding the most promise for the community, global economies and the environment. Located in one of the most dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystems for early-stage companies – Boulder and the University of Colorado – the BIC blends the resources of business and academia to optimize opportunities for the technologies and companies of the future.
