 Middlebury, Vermont, January 2010 – The new addition of three wooden swords to Maple Landmark’s line has created a new “pretend play” category. Coupled with the magic wands that were introduced in January 2009, the swords offer yet another way for children to express, grow, and develop.
Geared for children ages 4-6, these swords are crafted from hardwood plywood, highly sanded with gently rounded edges and finished with an earth-based ‘naturoil’ finish. Each sword measures about ¼” thick and 20” long, with the handle designed to fit comfortably in a child’s hand. The three sword styles include the Buccaneer, the Excalibur, and the Wizard. For folks that think swords are for boys, Maple Landmark’s previously introduced princess wands, in pink, yellow, purple or natural (to be decorated), are great for little girls. Each wand measures a total of 12” long with a 2” star mounted securely on the end of the ¼” dowel. Whether children are inspired by characters from books, television, computers or the world around them, pretend play allows children to develop to a higher intellectual level than children that don’t indulge in make believe. Studies have shown that pretend play enhances social and language skills (sharing, taking turns and development of situational vocabulary), creativity and imagination, emotional development (re-enacting events or feelings), and discipline.
