Most Everywhere, July 2017—In case you haven’t heard, cherries, that historic, and in many parts of the world, ubiquitous and pretty-to-look-at fruit, can be found in various varieties most everywhere. And it can be said they are this (and every) summer’s superfruit.

Not only do cherries have a wonderful, tart/sweet taste, they also work like magic to reduce inflammation—something we all fight, in varying degrees.

Research has shown that consuming sweet cherries can significantly decrease circulating concentrations of inflammatory biomarkers in the body and help to prevent chronic inflammatory diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis and cancer. Here are some things to know and run with:

Popping just 20 cherries in a sitting provides 25 milligrams of anthocyanins—antioxidants that reduce inflammation, by helping shut down the enzymes that cause tissue irritation. Anthocyanins (found primarily in dark red fruit and vegetables) may also protect arteries from damage that leads to heart disease.

Consuming cherries may help lower blood sugar levels and fight diabetes: Researchers from Michigan State University, after examining animals who had consumed cherries and the anthocyanins within, speculated that the same blood sugar lowering effect occurs in humans.

Chomping down on cherries may also help gout sufferers. Gout, a painful form of arthritis, is associated with elevated levels of uric acid. University of California/Davis scientists found that participants in their studies had reduced levels of uric acid after eating sweet cherries.

And cherries also contain agents that may help fight cancer.

The flavonoids isoquercitrin and quercitrin, and the phenol, ellagic acid, have been verified in cherries. These  flavonoids are known to be significant antioxidants, and ellagic acid appears to be a potent inhibitor to the growth of cancer cells.
